General Assembly Back in Session – Again
Governor Malloy’s Last Opening Day Address
CRMA Legislative Committee Gearing Up
Save the Date for CRMA’s First Big Event of The Year
-
- On Wednesday of this week, the Connecticut General Assembly gaveled themselves into formal session.
-
- As many of you know, CT’s constitution calls for the General Assembly to convene in EVEN numbered years like this year, from February to May.
-
- During this so-called “short session” the General Assembly is supposed to deal just with budgetary issues, but recently they do that and a whole lot more.
-
- The budget issues remain front and center for CT. While there was some good news recently, with some stronger than anticipated growth numbers as well as an influx of cash from prepaid taxes, we remain in debt both short and long-term.
- This General Assembly will once again have to deal with these challenges. Along with the challenges of funding long-term pension obligations, while balancing the political tightrope of an election year session.
- It will be busy for sure, and we will keep you updated all session long.
Governor Malloy’s Last Opening Day Address
-
- With this being his last budget that he would present to the General Assembly before he leaves office at the end of the year, the Governor took a little different approach to doing that.
-
- Instead of laying out all of his budget priorities in his address to the General Assembly, he announced the majority of them, including a proposal to increase the gas tax and introduce tolls as a way to prop up the Special Transportation Fund, days ahead of the speech.
-
- Many observers of the Capitol thought he would repeat those priorities, but rather the Governor barely mentioned them in his last opening day remarks to a joint session of House of and Senate members.
-
- Instead, his theme of this final address was CT fairness. You can go here for a more detailed look at his speech.
- Our friends at the CT Mirror, do another outstanding job of laying out the governor’s budget proposals. You can go here to review them.
